We run a range of Shore Based Courses throughout the year :
Nine Day Combined Day Skipper Theory and Practical
The Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, and those wanting to refresh their skills. In fact, it's for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving, and works well in complementing our on-the-water training, such as the Powerboat Level 2, Start Yachting and Helmsman courses.
It's a highly informative course with lots of opportunities for you to put your new found knowledge into practice. If you decide to take the course online, you will find many interactive exercises to help reinforce the information and lots of chances to try out what you've learned.
You will receive a course pack which includes a chart, plotter, dividers, course handbook, exercises and an electronic chart plotter CD. Mindful of the fact that people are increasingly short of time for leisure pursuits this is a new approach, aiming to give students an awareness and knowledge of basic navigation techniques and safety in just 16 hours.
Course topics include: charts and publications, safety, engine checks, buoyage, tidal awareness, visual and electronic navigation, pilotage, rules of the road, anchoring, weather forecasts and passage planning.

The day skipper shore based course is intended to equip the sailor with enough knowledge to
navigate around familiar waters by day and a basic knowledge of lights is also included – in case you arrive back in darkness.
The course is invaluable for those who want to start making decisions on board, especially
those beginners and crew who would like to become more actively involved in navigation. It is a comprehensive introduction to sailing for would-be skippers.
The course covers the basics of coastal navigation and pilotage including chart work, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting and meteorology,
knowledge of tides and International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea and electronic charts. Other topics covered include the construction, parts and equipment of a yacht, safety
procedures (emergency and safety equipment and procedures such as distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, life jackets and liferafts) and the basics of seamanship.
At the end of the course you will have to sit a written exam. Successful students will be awarded the Day Skipper - Shore Based Certificate.
The Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Shore Based is an advanced course building on the Day Skipper syllabus for more experienced skippers, which takes them up to the theory knowledge required for Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster practical exams, specifically concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.
The course devotes some revision time to the basics but covers advanced navigation techniques including position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge and use of Almanacs, admiralty publications and electronic position finding equipment.
The advanced meteorology tuition includes the taking and interpretation of forecasts, plotting of weather systems and weather predictions using barometer and observation. Students are shown how to use this information when planning and executing passage plans. The course also covers customs and excise regulations for going to, and returning from, abroad. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea are also dealt with in great detail.
The full course syllabus is in the RYA logbook G158 available from our office. At the end of the course you will have to sit a written exam. Successful students will be awarded the Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster Shore Based Certificate.
